Mass Grading Construction

As a part of the O’Hare Airport Modernization Program, Harbour Contractors completed a mass grading project, relocating the Bensenville Ditch to construct a new south field runway and runway 10C/28C.

Part of the relocated ditch alignment crossed two Union Pacific Railroad tracks. Harbour carried the realigned ditch beneath the railroad by tunneling four 12-foot diameter reinforced concrete pipes spaced 20 feet apart, all while maintaining railroad traffic. Harbour retained the railroad embankment by utilizing anchored sheet pile walls.

Runway 10C-28C received the 2014 Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois. Harbour was also recognized by the Construction Industry Service Corporation (CISCO), which awarded the new runway with its Infrastructure Project of the Year Award.
