Butler National Golf Club
OVERVIEW
Iconic Golf Course Construction
Harbour helped course designer, George Fazio, and his son, Tom, oversee the construction of what is now listed as one of the best golf courses in Golf Digest’s America’s Top 100 Golf Courses. The Butler National Golf Course project was coordinated through Harbour’s founder, I.C. “Red” Harbour, in 1972.
Developing Oak Brook, Illinois
Red was instrumental in developing the Oak Brook area, where Harbour has gone on to complete the Oak Brook Shopping Center, One Lincoln Centre, the Oak Brook Municipal Complex and Fire Station, MB Oak Brook Bank, Harger Woods Corporate Center, Butler National Golf Club, Oak Brook Public Library, WM Corporate Offices, and much more.
Home to the Western Open
Butler is an exclusive private, members-only golf club in Oak Brook, Illinois. Renowned golf course architect George Fazio designed the 7,523-yard course with a par of 71. Harbour ran with Fazio’s vision, and within two years, the club was open and home to the PGA Tour’s Western Open.
The club hosted the Western Open from 1974-1990. The tournament featured some of the game’s best, including Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson (Champion in 1974 and 1977, and 1984), Hale Irwin (1975), and Tom Kite (1986). In 1985, an amateur named Scott Verplank could hold off the field and claim victory. He is the second amateur to win the Western Open, the first being Chick Evans in 1910.
GolfDigest refers to and ranks Butler National Golf Club:
“Not flashy, but tough. This is pure golf from the first tee to the 18th green. It is a true and fair test for the scratch golfer and an extremely difficult one at that. It does not let up in challenging all the skills; distance, accuracy, finesse, and even the mental aspect. It can take a golfer out of their swing comfort zone.”
