OVERVIEW

General Contractor for Canadian National Rail

Harbour served as the general contractor for the Matteson Interconnection project for Canadian National. We cut and filled approximately 187,000 CY to provide the proper topography for installing the southeast, loop, and northeast connection between the IC main lines and the EJ&E main lines.

Harbour constructed a new bridge with two abutments, two piers, and retaining walls, allowing southbound trains on the IC mains to exit onto the EJ&E mains in east and west directions. We also removed, reinforced, and replaced one precast three-span bridge to allow the IC main to be relocated to the west to make room for the switch that leads to the future northeast connection track. We removed the existing access to the Metra station and installed new stairs, walls, and an ADA ramp. We also installed a new roadway drop-off loop for passengers entering and exiting the Metra station, including new pavement, guard rails, and storm drainage.

Additionally, Harbour installed a new triple crossing across Main Street. We added over 14,000 new track feet (wood tie-continuous welded rail and concrete tie continuous welded rail), installed 12 new switches, built 2,600 track feet of realignment, and removed 20,000 track feet.

The Matteson Interconnection is the keystone of the Canadian National network and includes:

  • New Bridge
  • Two Abutments
  • Two Piers
  • Retaining Walls
  • Roadway Drop-Off Loop, Stairs, ADA Ramp, Guard Rails, Storm Drain
