Lake Shore Drive Relocation
Chicago, Illinois
Harbour Engineering, Inc., a Harbour subsidiary, provided project management, construction engineering and inspection services to the City of Chicago Department of Transportation during the relocation of Lake Shore Drive. The eight-lane highway serves as the premier scenic roadway offering vistas of the Chicago skyline, Grant Park and Lake Michigan.
The nine-month, $45 million roadway relocation project consisted of moving the northbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive westward. The new roadway, constructed between the Field Museum, Soldier Fields and Metra railroad tracks provided vacant spacing along the lakefront that would later be turned into park space.
The assignment included multi phase maintenance of traffic operations of the construction of five bridge structures, roadway work and utilities. Coordination meetings with the Chicago Park District, museums, Chicago Bears and various city agencies were pinnacles to the success of the project.
The project commenced construction in March of 1996, and was completed five weeks ahead of schedule in November, 1996. The project has won numerous engineering and industry awards for innovation in design and construction.
